Description: Kiirk Douglas stars in this poignant drama set in Israel a year after it became a nation. Douglas is German/Jew Hans Muller, a once famous clown and juggler in Germany, before the Nazis sent him and his entire family to a concentration camp. We learn that he is the only one of his family that survived. Like thousands like him, he has come to Israel to try and rebuild his life. But the loss of his family and the experiences he has suffered, have left their mark. He cannot forget what he has seen, and suffers mentally for it.. Kirk is excellent in this film, putting in one of his most intense performances. Also look for John Banner (Hogan's Heros) in an early role. Contrary to other critics opinions, Kirk is an perfect choice for this role, since he was both a clown and juggler, before becoming an actor. Also, Kirk is of European/Jewish ancestry. I have seen most of director Edward Dmytryk's films, and he is not one to shy away from disturbing subject matter, and this is no exception. In fact, I have another rare Dmytryk film about Nazi practices I will be posting later this week. This was one of the first movies to deal with the after affects of the Holocaust. This is a fine movie, but due to the intense nature of some scenes, Parents should consider whether to permit younger viewers to watch this movie.
